Frequently Asked Questions About Virtual Physiotherapy

What is Virtual Physiotherapy?

Virtual Physiotherapy is the delivery of physiotherapy services at a distance without physical contact between the physiotherapist and the patient.  The service is rendered through the use of a private and secure video-conferencing software.  This is like a secure version of FaceTime or Skype.

Is Virtual Physiotherapy Right for Me?

  • Most people requiring physiotherapy can benefit from accessing it virtually.

  • I can treat anyone with pelvic or orthopaedic concerns who is a resident of Ontario.

  • If you are unsure of how I can help you please contact me and I can help answer any questions you may have.

What does a Virtual Physiotherapy Appointment Look Like?

  • You will receive an email with an appointment link after you book. This link will allow you to access your appointment on your smartphone, tablet, laptop or desktop computer.

  • Please note the browser that works best is Chrome or Firefox. Safari will not display the video.

  • Your physiotherapist will provide you with a thorough assessment through a secure video-conferencing software. The assessment will include an in-depth history about your symptoms, goals and exceptions. If appropriate, you will be asked to perform certain movements to assess function, strength and range of motion.  Finally, the physiotherapist will discussion your diagnosis and personalized plan of care.

  • You will NEVER be asked to show your perineum on camera.

What does Virtual Physiotherapy Include?

  • Education - one of the most important aspects of physiotherapy - what is going on, how to proceed safely and what to do next

  • Advice on sleep, posture, bowel/bladder positioning and irritants etc.

  • Assessing your breathing and movement mechanics

  • Teaching you self-mobilization, massage and soft-tissue techniques (which you can do your own or with the assistance of a loved one)

  • Stretching exercises for home, sport or work

  • Whole body strengthening exercises

  • Balance exercises

  • Core stabilization

  • Functional exercises

  • Ergonomic advice for home (virtual appointments allow us to see you in your home, performing real life activities such as lifting your baby and getting in and out of bed)

  • Ergonomic advice for your home office - many of us are in the position of working form home with make shift workstations, which bring about their own set of issues

  • Qi Qong, Yin Yoga postures/positions

What Equipment will I Need for my Virtual Appointment?

  • Emergency Contact - for your safety, in case something happens during the appointment

  • Phone - your physiotherapist will contact you should any technical difficulties arise

  • Device - a device with a camera, microphone and adequate internet service (please note: video does not work on Safari browser)

  • Space -  where you can move around or get down on the floor, as needed for the assessment.

  • Clothing - please wear something that you can easily move around in

  • I will work with what you have at home in terms of exercise equipment

Is Virtual Physiotherapy Covered by Insurance?

  • Yes! In Ontario, many insurance companies have stated they will cover virtual physiotherapy appointments.

  • As this is fairly new,  please check with your individual insurance provider.
